Powell

Powell’s history is very much tied to their namesake, Verne Q. Powell. A jeweller by trade, Powell fashioned himself a flute in 1910 from whatever Silver he could get his hands on, including Silver Dollars, watch casings, and spoons. This incredible feat of metalworking landed him a job at another flute company in Boston. He worked there until 1926, leaving to create his own company. His goal was to be able to produce the world’s finest French flutes. Creating his own company gave him the freedom to devote himself to detail and artistry.

Powell flutes are currently made in either the USA or China depending on the model. The Sonare flutes are made in China (by Di Zhao) and models from the PS501 and up are finished in the USA with a USA-made Signature headjoint. The Handmade Conservatory and Handmade Custom Flutes are made in their factory in Maynard, Massachusetts.
