Clarke

Robert Clarke invented the tin whistle in 1843 upon learning of the invention of the tin plate. Together with the help of a blacksmith, he copied his wooden whistle using a tin plate.

He created a wooden fipple with a stay from his wife's corset and a file.

This new instrument played so well and very quickly grew in popularity in many villages and upon meeting some Irish labourers, he sold them some tin whistles and once they went back to Ireland they quickly became an Irish folk favourite!
