What clarinet reed strength should I use?

The ideal clarinet reed strength depends on your playing experience. Beginning players will typically start on a 1.5-strength reed. As players become more experienced and build strength they will move up to a harder reed which gives more resistance and allows the player to control tonal colour, dynamics and articulation more precisely.

A common misconception is that reeds get thicker the higher the strength number, however, they get harder, firmer and less flexible. Reed strength is also not a standard across reed makers or even between the different ranges of the same maker.
