History of Höfner
The Höfner company was founded in 1887 by Karl Höfner. Karl started by manufacturing and selling violins. He quickly grew a reputation across Europe for making high-quality string instruments. After bringing his two sons into the business, they expanded their production line to include violas, cellos and double basses. Höfner also started to export their instruments worldwide. They continued to expand their range by producing their first guitar in the 1930s.
The 1950s saw an increase in production and orders of Höfner guitars. As musical taste began to change, Höfner innovated and designed some of their most iconic instruments. The birth of rock and roll caused the demand for Höfner guitars to increase further, making Höfner’s new Violin Bass one of the most iconic guitars in the world. Höfner’s popularity is largely due to Paul McCartney’s consistent use of his Höfner Violin Bass throughout his career.
After over 130 years, Höfner continues to manufacture high-quality string instruments. They have grown to become one of the largest string instrument manufacturers in Europe.
Craftmanship of Höfner Violins
Höfner combines traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology to create top-notch musical instruments. Despite being among the largest in Europe, Höfner maintains a small enough scale to preserve what makes them unique.
Höfner doesn’t use a robot-run production line and still uses luthier workshops. While machinery plays a role, most of their instruments are designed and built in-house. This means Höfner’s line of violins is still manufactured by skilled luthiers, giving each instrument its own character.
