Deering Banjos

Zenith Music is a specialist music store that stocks the widest range of unique instruments including banjos. Deering is considered by many to be the world’s finest banjos. Made in their workshop in San Diego, USA, these banjos are known for their exceptional sound and playability.

History of Deering

Deering was founded in 1975 by Greg and Janet Deering. Greg made his first banjo as part of his industrial arts major at San Diego College. In 1970, he began building banjos and repairing instruments at the American Dream Co-Op.

In 1975, Greg and Janet started the Deering Banjo Company and built their first factory. After years of manufacturing their own instruments, Deering purchased the Vega Company in 1989. Deering continued to produce Vega banjos that evoke the style crafted by Vega during the folk revival of the 1960s.

Deering released their Goodtime Series in 1997. These banjos were made more affordable while retaining the accuracy and playability of higher-end models. After over 45 years, Deering has become North America's largest banjos manufacturer.

Craftsmanship of Deering Banjos

Deering has produced over 100,000 hand-built banjos. These years of experience mean that their luthiers know the best way to make a banjo. Making it the right size & shape and using the right grain.

Deering aims to build high-quality banjos that everyone can afford. They do this by practising ‘lean manufacturing’. This involves knowing where value is added to the instrument during the manufacturing process and cutting out any unnecessary steps.
